This is a fantastic, high-energy gospel spiritual, and the Kim Sisters (the Korean-American vocal trio who were huge in the 1950s–60s) had a famously lively, jazzy, and swinging arrangement of it.

This is one of the most iconic, enduring, and curiously misunderstood songs in classic rock history. Released in 1976 on the album Agents of Fortune, it became the band's biggest hit, peaking at #12 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song is a comedic, deadpan tribute to Alfred Caouette, a real-life French politician and senator from the 1960s-70s. Gainsbourg mockingly sings about Caouette’s provincial, conservative, and somewhat boring persona, contrasting him with the sexy, bohemian world Gainsbourg usually inhabited. The joke? Caouette was the complete opposite of everything Gainsbourg stood for - which made him the perfect absurdist subject for a Gainsbourg pop song.

The song was written by the legendary Australian songwriter Tom Springfield (brother of Dusty Springfield).
It was The Seekers' first international hit and helped define the "folk-pop" sound of the mid-1960s with Judith Durham's crystal-clear lead vocals.

The song was already a well-known standard, having been recorded by countless artists before The Platters (including a famous 1935 version by Irene Dunne). However, in the late 1950s, The Platters' manager, Buck Ram, convinced the group to record an updated, "rock-and-roll" version with a doo-wop backbeat.
