The song is a comedic, deadpan tribute to Alfred Caouette, a real-life French politician and senator from the 1960s-70s. Gainsbourg mockingly sings about Caouette’s provincial, conservative, and somewhat boring persona, contrasting him with the sexy, bohemian world Gainsbourg usually inhabited. The joke? Caouette was the complete opposite of everything Gainsbourg stood for - which made him the perfect absurdist subject for a Gainsbourg pop song.
