This performance was a statement. Elvis had spent most of the 1960s making formulaic Hollywood movies with bland soundtrack songs. The '68 Special was his comeback to live, energetic rock-and-roll, and "What’d I Say" was a centerpiece showing he could still soulfully belt with the best of them.
